For your front back and side steel plates. Spall is when a bullet explodes into tiny fragments when hitting a steel plate at near a perpendicular degree angle. It can also happen on the BACK of the plate when higher energy rounds hit or a second round hits in the same spot, sending metal spall from the plate out into your body. Ricochet is when pieces, or even the whole bullet deflect off a steel plate when hitting at a sharper angle. These soft inserts are designed to go in your plate pockets IN FRONT of your steel SAPI plates to mostly eliminate spall and reduce ricochets . They stop the bullet fragments exploding off after hitting the steel to keep them from hitting you or your nearby buddy. Front plates are particularly dangerous because of being close to your carotid artery. All steel plates are prone to this problem. Spall Blockers work for many shots, but then you can replace with new ones to continue using your steel. And edge protection only stops spall from shots right at the edge, and can’t stop richocets or high angle spall. Ours are soft and flexible and weigh only 3oz each and are very thin. Made of Kevlar (10 times stronger than steel) and ballistic nylon. Testing shows 1 layer stops most spall, but these are 5 layers, to stop the spall and also reduce ricochets. These need to be in a regular pocket to be in close contact with your plate to work well. Carriers using just a strap to hold your plate (such as some Condor vests) don’t work as well. You can duct tape them to your plates to use in these strap type holders. Nothing will stop all ricochets, that is why steel is not used by military or police, but these stop the majority of the problem. (Point Blank and Second Chance add 1 layer to their steel plates and says it will stop spall). What you will receive is exactly what is described.
